Wig sales soared during lockdown as hairdressers shut and more people suffered from hair loss as a side effect of coronavirus.

There has also been a rush for appointments at wigmakers after reopening as people try to remedy thinning hair, which sellers believe is caused by lockdown stress and the virus.

Jo Pickering, of London wigmaker Mandeville, said: ‘Our diaries are now jam-packed. We’re getting lots of new clients.’

Caroline Shallow, of another London wigmaker Raoul, said: ‘Hair loss has become a bigger problem as it is one of the side effects of Covid.’

Rebecca Gono, founder of online seller Moramode, which has gone from selling 20 wigs a month to more than 100, said many new customers ‘hadn’t worn a wig before but they couldn’t get to the hairdresser’.

She added: ‘As the lockdown went on lots of people experienced hair loss due to stress, or reported it after having Covid.’
