Footage of transport workers cleaning a train in Melbourne has gone viral due to their remarkably lacklustre effort, briefly dusting the carriage as they wander down.

Public transport services across Victoria have been cleaned more frequently over the past year to keep commuters safe during the coronavirus pandemic.

But one eagle-eyed commuter noticed efforts to keep trains sanitised appeared to have slipped recently.

Will Nakos filmed two cleaners, dressed in fluro orange vests, as they walked through the carriage of a metro service with a cloth.

The pair flung the cleaning rags over the seats and on the handles that hang from the roof.

‘Deep cleaned every day,’ Mr Nakos wrote over the video.

He joked that it was comparable to a mother asking her child to clean their room.

But most viewers were less than impressed and claimed the duo should be taking their job more seriously.

‘Caught them slacking,’ one person wrote.

‘More spreading than disinfecting… just stop doing these “deep cleans” altogether,’ commented another.

Other commenters questioned how much money the cleaners would likely earn for the task.

The Public Transport Victoria website says there is ‘more cleaning, more often’ due to coronavirus.

‘We’re disinfecting and sanitising all services, stops and stations on our network every day to help keep you safe while travelling,’ the website reads.
