Labour councils imposing bigger council tax hikes than Tories

With local tax set to be a major issue in regional and local elections in May, official statistics published by the Ministry for Communities, Housing and Local Government (CHLG) this week show that for 2021/22, Labour local authorities in England are imposing on average 4.2 percent increases. This is compared with 2.9 percent under Conservative local authorities.

On average Conservative councils charge less council tax on a typical Band D home than Labour and Lib Dem councils with Labour councils averaging £1,567, Lib Dems £1,594 and Conservatives £1,474.

Local government minister Luke Hall said: “These figures show that council tax bills are rising more in Labour councils.

“Council tax in Conservative councils is on average £93 less on a typical Band D home than in Labour councils and £120 less than in Liberal Democrat councils.

“In Labour-run Wales, bills are soaring by up to 6.4 percent this year and Labour’s London Mayor is hiking his council tax by 9.5 percent.

“Up and down the country, it’s Conservative councillors and councils who have a proven record of managing taxpayers’ money wisely and providing better local services.
