IRS announces MAY 17 deadline for 2020 tax returns

IRS announces MAY 17 deadline for 2020 tax returns – giving Americans an additional month to file paperwork due to COVID-19 pandemic

  • IRS usually requires Americans to file their tax returns by April 15
  • This year, they are giving citizens until May 17 to lodge all their paperwork
  • Millions of Americans have already completed their returns in order to receive $1,400 stimulus payments
  • The IRS has confirmed there are delays in the release of tax refunds, which usually take 21 days to hit bank accounts, due to the release of the stimulus

The Internal Revenue Service has announced that Americans have until Monday May 17 to file their 2020 tax returns.

The date is a 32-day extension on the regular deadline of April 15, with the IRS responding to concerned citizens who say they need more time to prepare their returns amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The delay applies to all individuals filing Forms 1040 and 1040-SR, but those who need even more time can request an automatic extension by completing Form 4868.

That extension gives payees until October 15 to submit their paperwork, however the IRS has cautioned that people must pay what they owe by May 17 or interest and penalties will start to apply.

The IRS and the Treasury Department announced they were extending the tax filing deadline last month, but did not give a specific date.

At the time, House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal praised the move.

‘Under titanic stress and strain, American taxpayers and tax preparers must have more time to file tax returns.’ he stated.

‘This extension is absolutely necessary to give Americans some needed flexibility in a time of unprecedented crisis.’

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the IRS has also been a key player in doling out government relief payments.

Many Americans have already lodged their 2020 returns in order to qualify for the latest $1,400 stimulus payment passed by the Democratic-controlled Congress earlier this year.

However, many have complained of delays in receiving the $1,400 into their bank accounts, due to demand.

Additionally, the IRS has confirmed there have been delays in the release of tax refunds, which usually take 21 days to hit bank accounts.

The underfunded IRS has been struggling to issue both tax returns and stimulus payments simultaneously.
