A hotelier has been taken to court on murder charges after the naked bodies of a young couple were found dead inside a shower while they were staying with him as guests.

Kevin Pretorius, 47, was apprehended on April 6 and was taken to court in the South African town of Humansdorp on the day of his arrest.

He is accused of the murders of Jean Vosloo, 25, and Mari Hoon, 28, whose lifeless bodies were found in their ensuite shower of his small hotel around 11 miles from the town of Kareedouw in the Eastern Cape in April last year.

The engaged couple from Gauteng had been staying at the Kliphuis Guesthouse, located on a farm, for a mini-break with a friend, who was the one who found their dead bodies.

The police launched an investigation into the death of the couple, who had no apparent injuries. A toxicology report later found they had succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning and their blood levels contained upwards of 70 per cent of the gas.

Carbon monoxide, known as the silent killer, is odourless and is produced when there is not enough oxygen during combustion, for example from a gas boiler or a fire. It poisons the body by blocking the red blood cells from being able to transport oxygen.

Following statements from witnesses and experts, the police charged Pretorius with murder, though specific details of the breakthrough that led to the charges have not been revealed.

It is unclear why the charge is murder, which means there was intent to kill, as opposed to manslaughter, which would normally be attached to cases where there has been a death as a result of faulty equipment, and where police initially said they believed a faulty gas boiler was to blame.

However, the charges followed police interviews with several people including experts when the investigation started on 26th of April last year.

Pretorius paid ZAR 1,000 (GBP £50) bail and the hearing has been postponed to May 24.

He has so far refused to comment on the case, refusing to speak to reporters who contacted him by phone.
