'Hiding UK figures, Guy!' Verhofstadt mocked for saying Covid not over until it ends in EU

The Belgian MEP tweeted: “Covid is not over in EU and US unless it’s over for the world! Global solidarity is our only option… and yes, patents will need to be opened up sooner rather than later.”

However, Mr Verhofstadt has been attacked for his claims following the EU’s disastrously slow vaccine rollout.

One person tweeted: “Nice way to hide UK figures, Guy.”

Another person said: “Best get rolling those vaccines out then Guy.”

Someone else said: “That’s not true though.

“It simply isn’t.

“Covid will be over for Europe LONG before it’s over for the world.”

While another person said: “Well judging by the total failure of EU, I don’t think they will need any advice from you!”

A fifth person mocked the MEP and told him to stop pointing the finger to “distract from the EU’s incompetence”.

“As all attempts to do this have come back and bit you on the arse.”

According to EU figures, just 28 percent of adults across the bloc have had at least one dose of the vaccine.

This compares to nearly two-thirds of UK adults and 56.3 percent of US adults who have received one jab of a vaccine.

This week, the former chief Brexit negotiator for the EU, Michel Barnier, said the EU’s rollout was slower to act as all 27 member states had to act as one.

He told France Inter: “It is true that there were mistakes at the start – why?

“Because we wanted to decide for 27 and not on our own.

“It is easier to decide on our own, rather than as 27, especially since we didn’t have that expertise in Europe.

“This is one of the lessons to be learned.

“Perhaps there are issues in Europe where it will be necessary to hand over the decision-making to the country, or to the region.”

He then added: “We don’t know how to take risks.

“The British took risks by financing the private sector.

“The Americans took risks.

“We don’t know how to do that yet.”
