  • Several inquiries were made to adopt Fofinho, who was stabbed in the chest and abdomen

A dog has been reunited with its owner and her family after it was stabbed while trying to protect them from the woman’s abusive husband in Brazil.

Brazilian online news portal G1 reported that Fofinho suffered four wounds as he tried to stop the man, 62, from beating the grandmother, 58, last Monday at the family’s home in Coração de Jesus, a municipality located in the state of Minas Gerais.

The man stabbed his 18-year-old grandson in the hand and then attacked the pooch with a knife. He fled the home before he was arrested the following day, police said.

Corporals Valmintas Souza and Diego Garcia, who are assigned to the city’s military police, noticed Fofinho’s injuries and sought the help of a local veterinarian who was away traveling.

Souza, who has a dog and three adopted cats, took to social media to see if there was a veterinarian available to save Fofinho’s life and rushed him to an animal clinic 49 miles away in the city of Monte Carlos.

According to veterinarian Caio Santos, Fofinho was stabbed in the abdomen and chest, and could have died had the officer spent more time trying to locate a clinic to save him. Santos said the dog had feces droppings in his stomach area.

Santos performed a laparotomy on Fofinho to clean and close the abdomen wounds.

‘It is very common for pet animals to take advantage of a situation, it is a natural behavior for them to try to act in this form of defense, so much so that many act with the function of guard dogs,’ Santos said.

Souza hailed Fofinho’s heroic reaction to his owner and the grandchildren being threatened by the knife-wielding suspect.

‘This dog’s story touched society because of the protective instinct he had, in an impulse to protect the owner, he ended up seriously injured,’ Souza said.

‘But this mobilization of society shows that if each one contributes in his own way, everything can be much better immensely to the people who expressed the desire to help.’

Area pet owners expressed interest in reaching out to the grandmother and adopting Fofinho in the days following the horrific attack.

‘We saw how attached the dog is to the owner and how she also has a passion for him,’ Souza said. ‘But the best place he can be for sure is next to her.’
