A vegan beauty magnate who was taken to court accused of making a false insurance claim against Airbnb after a guest allegedly stole several items from her luxury apartment has had charges against her dropped.

Cassandra House faced Southport Magistrates Court on the Gold Coast on Tuesday after being charged with one count of attempted fraud in November last year.

But police failed to provide evidence to the court to support the allegation, resulting in the charge against Ms House being dropped, the Gold Coast Bulletin reported.

Ms House said when police charged her and alleged she overvalued the prices of goods stolen in an insurance claim against Airbnb, she was left ‘in shock’.

‘I have definitely had suicidal flashes. You think “is this really me, is this really happening? Is this what I’m going through when I’ve done nothing wrong?”,’ Ms House said outside of court.

‘If this wasn’t over today I don’t know how much longer I would have been able to survive it.’

Ms House had filed an insurance claim with Airbnb for thousands of dollars after the guest stayed at her apartment on Southport’s Main Beach between March 29 and April 5, 2018 while she was on her honeymoon in Italy.

She said she locked her expensive possessions in a cabinet before leaving but arrived home to find several items missing, including a silver banana, designer bags and shoes from bands such as Gucci, and Swarovski jewellery.

Airbnb refused to pay the insurance claim.

Ms House then sued Airbnb in June last year for $253,000, claiming in a lawsuit filed against the accommodation provider the guest destroyed luxury Kruger pans and kitchen pots worth more than $1,300.

She also claimed the guest stole a $50 silver banana and a $279 bottle of Dom Perignon champagne.

The motivational speaker said in her filing the banana matched the ‘apple decor’ of her two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment – which was available to rent for $700 per week.

Other six-figure valuations in the long list of claims include $10,000 worth of Swarovski jewellery, $25,000 worth of Tiffany and Co ‘diamond gifts’ from Arbonne and $55,000 in engagement presents.

Ms House’s civil action against Airbnb is still before the courts.
