Fans and commentators slam Canterbury Bulldogs for keeping concussed Lachlan Lewis on field

Sickening moment footy star is nearly knocked out cold in ugly head clash but is allowed to KEEP PLAYING despite struggling to keep his feet – as fans turn on the NRL

  • Lachlan Lewis allowed to stay on field despite suffering obvious concussion
  • Bulldogs forward suffered ugly head knock tackling Rabbitohs’ Josh Mansour
  • Lewis stumbled over twice before being held up by two South Sydney players
  • Commentators and fans slammed the decision to keep Lewis on the field

Commentators and fans have labelled the Canterbury Bulldogs a ‘disgrace’ after a clearly concussed player was allowed to continue despite twice stumbling over.

Bulldogs forward Lachlan Lewis made an awkward tackle on South Sydney Rabbitohs winger Josh Mansour in the opening stages of their annual Good Friday clash where he copped several shots to his head.

Lewis attempted to stand up and get back into the defensive line but stumbled twice before being held up by two opposition players.

Despite being treated by the team trainer, Lewis was allowed to continue – to the shock of commentators Dan Ginnane and Braith Anasta.

The incident unfolded in just the sixth minute of the first half with Mansour bringing the ball out of his own end.

Lewis, a reknowned defender who has struggled with concussion issues in the past, got his head stuck in an awkward place and made heavy contact with Mansour’s knees.

The 24-year-old attempted to stand up and run back to the defensive line but twice stumbled, clearly badly concussed.

Mansour and Latrell Mitchell recognised his state immediately and ran to hold him upright as he could barely stand under his own power.

The Bulldogs trainer conducted an assessment onfield and decided Lewis was OK to continue, shocking the commentators who voiced their outrage.

Lewis lasted barely another minute before he was taken off for a concussion test, still looking extremely dazed and unwell. He did not return to the game.

Players are required to undergo a Head Injury Assessment (HIA) and asked a series of questions and commands in order to return to the game.

Fans immediately reacted to the decision on Twitter, with many labelling the initial call to keep him on the ground a ‘disgrace’.

‘That’s a disgrace… Lachlan Lewis gets knocked out and cleared to carry on initially, without any HIA,’ one fan said.

‘What the hell? How can Lewis remain on the field after staggering around like that?’ another tweeted.

‘Lachlan Lewis would have been denied service at any bar yet is allowed to stay on the field here’ a fan commented.
