EU panders to Joe Biden in hapless charm offensive – but bloc still banned from US exports

The White House chief was invited to join the virtual gathering by European Council President Charles Michel. He becomes the first American leader to address an EU gathering since Barack Obama did so in 2009 – the same opportunity was not afforded to Donald Trump. Officially President Biden will appear briefly to discuss EU-US relations at the get-together on Thursday evening.

But European chiefs are expected to beg him to drop a US ban on the export of life-saving coronavirus vaccines.

Mr Michel said: “Looking forward to welcome President Biden at this week’s European Council meeting.

“I have invited the President of the US to join our meeting for him to share his views on our future cooperation.

“Time to rebuild our transatlantic alliance.”
