‘We wish to express heartfelt thanks for the thousands of messages conveying good wishes, thoughts and prayers we have received in the past few days,’ the television and radio presenter wrote on Instagram.

‘Along with Jim, we have been particularly heartened and inspired by those who have shared their own person cancer experiences with us.

‘We thank every single person who has reach out. We are overwhelmingly grateful for your kindness.’

Mr Molan will begin treatment as soon as possible, vowing to fight the disease.

‘I have never been afraid to fight the battles that need fighting and this is no exception,’ he said.

Mr Molan also shared the message to his Instagram account.

The 70-year-old will undergo further testing this week to determine the exact prognosis and best treatment plan.

Mr Molan first entered politics in 2016 after a successful 16-year military career.

Following his retirement in 2008, he released a biography titled Running the War in Iraq, which detailed his experience as Chief of Operations in Iraq between 2004 and 2005.

Despite announcing he would step back from politics to focus on his physical health, Mr Molan said his office would remain committed to ‘working on the issues that matter’ alongside the Morrison government.

Molan previously discussed the pair’s close relationship during an interview with Stellar Magazine in 2020, crediting her tough-as-nails father for helping her through her first years as a television journalist, when she claims she was mercilessly trolled.

After an onslaught of particularly nasty trolls attacked her on Twitter, she called her dad, hoping for a pep talk.

What she received instead was far more important.

‘I remember him saying, ”Have you been shot at by the infidel in Iraq? No, so toughen the f*ck up. Who cares?”,’ she recalled.
