On what would have been Captain Sir Tom Moore’s 101st birthday, Dame Judi Dench led the tributes yesterday with an awfully sweet homage.

Captain Tom’s 100 laps of his garden raised almost £40million for the NHS. Dame Judi chose a less physically demanding feat, eating 100 Maltesers instead.

Footage shared by the Captain Tom Foundation’s Twitter account showed the 86-year-old working her way through her favourite treats in an attempt to encourage others to raise money with their own challenges over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Captain Tom’s family rang the bell before the start of play at Lord’s cricket ground yesterday to officially launch the Captain Tom 100 challenge.

Benjie, 17, said of his grandfather, who died in February: ‘He will be looking down and thinking ‘what a pleasure for our family to be here’.’
