Boris Johnson to make important statement on Russia TODAY as Putin's troops cross border

The Prime Minister will update on the rapidly developing situation after President Vladimir Putin sent tanks into eastern Ukraine’s two breakaway regions.

Moscow last night officially recognised the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic as independent states.

Mr Johnson held an emergency Cobra meeting on the incursion at 6.30am with Western leaders giving up all hope of avoiding conflict.

“The invasion of Ukraine has begun,” Cabinet minister Sajid Javid conceded this morning.

The Health Secretary added: “We are waking up to a very dark day in Europe and it’s clear from what we have already seen and found out today that the Russians, President Putin, has decided to attack the sovereignty of Ukraine and its territorial integrity.”

Mr Johnson will outline severe economic sanctions being imposed on Russia when he makes his statement in the Commons.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss announced measures would be brought into place last night in conjunction with the US and EU.

She said Mr Putin’s actions could not be allowed to go “unpunished”.
