BBC in awkward gaffe as Nicola Sturgeon mistakenly named as Labour leader in TV debate

The blunder happened as the Scottish First Minister was taking part in the BBC’s Holyrood TV debate. The live discussion aired yesterday in preparation for the Scottish Parliament election on May 6.

Ms Sturgeon was not the only participant whose name was accidentally swapped for Mr Sarwar’s.

Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross also had a caption displaying the name and job title of his opponent.

Bemused viewers took to social media to point out the mistake, with some Twitter users poking fun at the situation.

One person asked: “Do you think the @BBCScotlandNews ‘wants us to vote Anas Sarwar?!?’”

Another user responded: “It’s fine, they balanced it out by not zooming to him on camera for his spotlight introduction.”

A third commenter added: “I know I don’t pay much attention to Labour anymore but Anas Sarwar is looking a bit different these days.”

One user pointed out: “First few minutes were quite entertaining”.

Scotland is set to head to the polls to elect 129 Members of the Scottish Parliament.

In her opening statement, Ms Sturgeon said “serious times” demand “serious leadership”, and she said she had done her best every day to lead the nation through the coronavirus pandemic.

Ms Sturgeon said she proposes “continued strong leadership” and help for Scotland with resources such as the National Care Service, the Young Person’s Guarantee and more affordable homes.

The SNP leader added that her immediate goal is to vanquish the virus in order to begin Scotland’s economic recovery.

Mr Ross said his party would “focus on rebuilding Scotland” and “delivering opportunities” for the next generation.

Mr Sarwar argued he would concentrate on “national recovery” and that he intended to “focus on what unites us as a country, not what divides us”.

Willie Rennie of the Scottish Liberal Democrats said he would spend “every second” of the next five years “focusing on putting the recovery first”.
