A large ant has challenged a venomous brown snake to a terrifying battle on a dirt road in outback Australia.

Business owner Seth Emery, 37, and his two sons were out camping with friends at Waitpinga Camp Site in South Australia when they spotted the pair wrestling in the gravel.

Mr Emery said his sons spotted the large ant between the snake’s scales as it tried to  free itself.

‘I got the boys to step back knowing most snakes are dangerous, and then I took a closer look,’ he said.

In the footage the ant is seen attacking the snake’s head as the reptile thrashed around the dirt in the ground.

The ant wouldn’t let go of the snake but the reptile survived the attack.

While he has no idea why the ant attacked the baby snake, he assumes the serpent must have crawled close to the ants, who felt threatened.

The footage of the frightening scuffle was posted to social media on March 21 and has been viewed thousands of times.

‘This is crazy… such a super big ant,’ one woman said.

‘Love our country,’ another commented.
