  1. Agra Red Fort 

One of the UNESCO world heritage monuments, Agra Red Fort, is a glorious tribute to the Mughal Empire’s heydays. Sprawling over a vast area of 3,80,000 sq. meters, the fort was built in 1556 by Emperor Akbar and later renovated with red sandstone in 1573. The magnificent fort is fortified on all sides with 21-meter high compound walls. The structure houses numerous palaces, such as the Shish Mahal, Khaas Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas and Diwan-i-Aam.

  1. Fatehpur Sikri 

The erstwhile capital city of Agra during the Mughal period, Fatehpur Sikri is a must-visit Agra destination. Located on a 3 km long and 1 km wide rocky ridge, the attraction is designed in Persian, Indian and Islamic architecture. The locally quarried red sandstone was used in the construction of Fatehpur Sikri. The town is guarded by seven gates with a boundary wall extending up to 6 km. UNESCO later declared it as a World Heritage site.

This four minaret shrine can easily accommodate approximately 25,000 people to offer prayers at a time. The Jama Masjid has three gateways that offer a majestic look to the shrine. This World Heritage Site has a lofty dome, jaw-dropping tapestry, imposing archways built in red stone. Constructed in 17th century, this mosque is popularly known as the “Friday Mosque.”

Sikandra Fort is among the most historical and significant places to visit in Agra. Built in deep red sandstone, this is an outstanding structure that boasts timeless architectural beauty and depicts the glorious past of Agra. Situated in Sikandra, this fort is the tomb of the great Emperor Akbar. This gigantic fort stands tall amidst the lush greenery of the gardens spread on all sides and enclosed within high walls. The beautiful garden is divided into smaller sections that tune with the landscaping traditions of the times. The fountains standing here add to the beauty of this structure. Said to be personally supervised by Emperor Akbar, the fort comprises five levels, with intricate carvings decorating the walls. This is among the well-preserved monuments in the city, and is undoubtedly one of the best tourist places in Agra.
